I am writing a paper on the Sons of Liberty and the biggest question I have is when do the Sons of Liberty stop existing? Are they just the colonists that caused the early riots against the stamp collectors and the Tea Party, or did they go all the way through Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker hill until the Declaration of Independence. I know the Loyal Nine were a specific group of people with known members, yet there is no set group of names for the Sons of Liberty. Can it be inferred that first and second continental congresses were run by Sons of Liberty? Was the Declaration of Independence written by Sons of Liberty? Were the minutemen also considered Sons of Liberty? When do the Sons of Liberty stop being Sons of Liberty and start being just revolting colonists?
In short, the Sons of Liberty were an extra-legal organization. After British government collapsed in Massachusetts, they became the law. So, in effect, the Sons of Liberty stopped existing after the Battle of Lexington and Concord, and members of the Sons went on to take positions in the state and national governments that followed.
The Minutemen were, more formally, the minute companies of the Massachusetts colonial militia. These companies were formed from the most physically able and committed (rebellious) men of the militia.
