If a prisoner was reichsdeutscher (of the German race, and from Germany), he could expect to recieve certain "privileges". According to Primo Levi, a "reichsdeutscher" would be almost guaranteed promotion of some sort (eg as Kapo). This would put him in a position of power, and thus he would be treated with deference and respect.

It is important to remember that prisoners in concentration camps were segregated by race/ethnicity. Hence there would not be much interaction between prisoners of different race.
