I think a lot of this is due to American propaganda. The American Revolution is often portrayed as "a group of courageous patriots fighting an oppressive foreign government." In reality it was more like a civil war where many people did not want to separate from Great Britain. That's not to say that British soldiers never acted badly, particularly in "non white" colonies. However I doubt that they were really any worse than the soldiers of other empires of that era.
