In the thirteenth century, a border dispute along with wider pro-imperial/pro-papal divisions (in part spurred by Modena's overlord, Azzo d'Este, to distract the city's ruling class from the fact that he was reducing their power) between the cities of Modena and Bologna flared tempers, causing both cities to take up arms several times against each other.

The actual breaking point in what had previously been a perry border dispute happened when a couple of Modenese thugs broke into Bologna and stole a bucket. A pitched battle ensued involving nearly fifty thousand men.

Alessandro Tassoni wrote an "ironic" epic about it in the early 17th century.
