What did Viking-era shields try to communicate?

by CarISatan

Do we know what round shields were communicating to the enemy and/or peers of norse warriors? Was it intended to intimidate the enemy, show how one could keep up with current trends/fashions, displaying wealth and status, tribalism/group identity or is this motivation unknown?

Could you clarify the question? It seems like your asking why the viking-era shields are round, but then you start talking about communication and I get confused.
