I'd like to draw attention to Do we have any idea what percentage of Europeans could read a Bible before it was translated out of Latin? How thorough was a lay person's understanding of Catholicism if they couldn't understand/read Latin, and how did they accomplish that? if only to encourage a bit of a scholarly exchange in what is a very interesting question that seems to have flown under the radar (my reply being the only one thus far).

I posted this very late in the week... Did Magellan's crew engage in cannibalism?

There has been some interest but no replies. Most importantly I was hoping to get a translation (from Italian) of a phrase from the primary source of Magellan's expedition. I found a sentence that as best I can tell is a confession of the authors participation in the cannibalism of 21 people during the return voyage. My Italian is poor, but best I can tell it says "In this short time I bit into twenty one men". Can someone please confirm or correct this translation?
