Most espresso drinks have Italian names because espresso machines were invented in Italy in the late 19th century. At the time, coffee prices were fixed by the government if the drink was consumed standing up, and with increasing urbanization and industrialism in Italy, people were looking for places to socialize, but they also needed extremely fast service. As espresso culture spread to other countries from Italy, many Italian names were kept or invented ('latte' is short for 'caffe latte' which just means coffee with milk, but lattes were invented in Berkeley).
