I'm currently studying mid-19th century America, and the republicans were, at that point, radical, while the democrats were conservative, as far as I understand it. Now today, democrats are liberal and republicans are conservative. Exactly when did this swap happen, if it can be pinpointed, and if it can't, at what general time did the two sides change?
