Perhaps "Genghis Khan" by John Man, although it seems to downplay the atrocities i'm afraid.

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford is a starting point. This reads a little bit like popular history, but the content is pretty accurate. I'm in the middle of reading it for a grad class.
