I was showing one of my favorite scenes from the show to a friend and he mentioned not liking the sound of the weapons. How accurate is their portrayal? I think he means the M1 Carbine as heard around the 1:00 mark here.

The show seems quite good about keeping realism and accuracy to a high standard but the guns do seem very quiet and "weak" sounding. Is this so actors can fire and yell at the same time without having their voices cut off?
They use blank rounds, and yes they want you to hear what the actors are saying in a actual fire fight you would have to scream at the person next to you and or use hand signals
Your friend is right, the various sounds are pretty muted, or else added in after effects. Compare the sound of the MG 42 firing at around the 3:00 minute mark to an actual recording and it's evident that the sound in the show is noticeably 'tinny' and has an audibly lower cyclical rate. I imagine the explanation bigcrazy80 provided as to /why/ this is the case is correct.
