I'm just curious, where did you read about Hoplite Marines?

There wasn't a distinction between Hoplites fighting on land or on sea, both were citizens fulfilling their duty to the Polis; they were stationed on ships or on land depending on the need.

The word Marines itself was first applied in the 12th-13th century in Venice; cities ruled by the Republic overseas supplied a levy of soldiers to help defend the city; these were called Schiavoni (Big Slavs) if they came from Croatia, where they were drawn from the Slavic-Speaking lower classes, or Oltremarini if they came from other cities in Greece or the Levant (literally, "Overseas People", but I prefer calling them "Ultramarines"). These soldiers were often posted to Venetian ships, and were the first modern western infantry posted primarily on ships. Specialized companies of Infantry trained to fight on ships were founded in the Italian states in the 14th century: the first true marines.
