Towards the end of his life after he had turned back from India and arrived back in Babylon, Alexander soon began planning his next campaign. The regions he was looking to were the Arabian Peninsula, Carthage along North Africa, the region surrounding the Caspian Sea, and the new and developing Roman Republic. At the time of his death he had begun plans for an invasion of the Arabian Peninsula so his thoughts of conquest in Rome were put aside for a later time. Otherwise, the Roman Republic hadn't really reached a point where it was particularly relevant beyond the Italian Peninsula.
