This isn't really an answerable question. Sub-Saharan Africa was/is a huge geographical area with hundreds of distinct cultures that has been home to humanity since our emergence about two hundred thousand years ago. Additionally, many of these groups' histories were passed down orally, which unfortunately means they aren't easily reconciled with western calendrical views of the past. Do you have specific groups mind?
