I've been searching for a map that shows where the allies were on the day Germany surrendered but can't find one, obviously I know that the Soviets were in Berlin but how close were the other allied countries?
The West Point Atlas of the US Army in World War II has a map the shows the position of the Allied armies in Germany on May 7th 1945. Unfortunately, google images do not turn up any good sized images of that map. A bigger and easier to read map from that same book shows what the western allies did, once they crossed the Rhine river. It shows where they were on April 18th 1945.
The US Ninth and First Armies had reached the Elbe river, but Eisenhower ordered them to stop at the Elbe river, because east of the Elbe would be in the post war occupation zone of the USSR. Montgomery was ordered to push towards the north and reached the Baltic Sea and cut off Denmark and Schlieswig-Holstein from the rest of Germany. The Third and Seventh US Armies were ordered to push to the south and east after April 18th. The Third Army reached the Fulda gap and entered south western Czechoslovakia by May 7th and the Seventh Army was in the upper Danube valley, near Vienna, when the war ended.
