A little bit of a St. Patrick's Day themed question.

Let me give some background from me, first. In my family there is a tradition of naming your eldest son "William". I've never really dug into why this is a tradition, but it is one and it goes back at least 5 generations that I know of. I've often wondered who this "William" was and generally assumed he was a cult of personality somewhere down the line or perhaps a Scottish figure of some sort since our family associates most strongly with Scottish ancestry.

Come to present day, I have my first son, and decide to research our genealogy / family tree for names and to learn more about this tradition. I come to find that our original U.S. ancestor come over via Northern Ireland around 1790 or so and it is presumed that he or his family came from Scotland before that.

This led me to learning about the Ulster Scots, and in particular I have come across the story of William the Orange or William the III of England and the strong support he had from the Ulster Scots.

Knowing this, I'm beginning to wonder if my family has been naming their children, unwittingly now, after William the Orange on and off for the last few hundred years. Is there any other record of a tradition like this among protestants in Scotland/N. Ireland?

As a bonus, I'd also like to know if the fact that my family is historically Presbyterian has any special significance to the Northern Ireland conflicts, particularly around the 1790's when our family decided to leave Ulster.
