are you sure you are not talking about the HRE frederic Barbarosa? He really did drown in a river to horrific results for the 3rd crusade.

The Teutonic order was a catholic holy order fighting eastern powers which famously lost the battle of the ice to alexander nevsky It was later vassalizzed by poland and eventaully became a polish vassal and then the kingdom of prussia.
