I've seen a few Canadian Redditors write that German prisoners were treated so well by their Canadian captors that they decided to stay in Canada after the war.
Is there any truth to that? What about German POWs in the United States?
And if any did indeed stick around, how were they received by people in the country they once fought against?
This actually did happen, though sometimes it wasn't very legal. Georg Gartner is the first prisoner who comes to mind, and there are plenty of stories of young German POWs who come back to Canada and the States. Some may have met a pretty girl, others might have just not wanted to remain in heavily damaged Europe.
