The most important book right now is Peter H. Wilson's Europe's Tragedy, a truly sweeping account that covers both the deep background context and much of the minutia of the War. It's intimidatingly long, but I don't think it's going to be overthrown as "the" account any time soon. It's a worthy successor to Parker's work, in my opinion.
