Unfortunately I cannot speak anything to the societal of political ramifications.

But from a scientific standpoint, there was an understanding between the Soviet Program (ASUSSR I think?) and NASA to share scientific data from new frontiers as per an agreement for cultural/scientific exchange signed in 1958.

From a scientific standpoint, this was regarded as a win for all and the Soviets were looking forward to receiving data from the US.

Similarly, the Soviets pioneered the space exploration of Venus, and the United States benefited from their work on this front, as that knowledge was also shared.
