I know Steven Pinker had his famous (and much debated) book The Better Angels of Our Nature, where he argued that violence has been decreasing over time and is at its lowest levels ever, at least per capita, in the present day. It's attracted a lot of praise and criticism, with a lot of the criticism, to my understanding, focusing on his implicit biases and the sloppiness of his figures.

With that in mind, has anybody other than Pinker tried to figure out whether we're more or less violent than during the past? It certainly seems like a worthwhile issue to me.
