Pol Pot's 'Year Zero' genocide program references the French Revolution. Why did he choose that rather than the more contemporary communist uprisings. Was he not a typical communist?

He wasn't a Marxist scholar, but "inspired" by his political socialization, which took place in France, hence the reference. He studied in Paris for a time. In his last interview, he referenced a book about the French Revolution as one he picked up and that fascinated him.
