What happened when the people chiseling words into stone made a typographical error?

by Miroudias

... did they start over?

... did they cross it off and just keep going?

... or did they chisel out a square part and put some form of replacement insert?

The most famous such error I know of can be found at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.. As you can see here, the bottom of the "E" was filled in to correct it back to an "F".
