Hey guys i'm planning to write about life in fortress cities in the 18th century. Does anyone know from the top of your head some literature on this subject, with regards to relations between military, society and state?
One of the best books I read last year was The Defortification of the German City, 1689-1866 by Yair Mintzker which covers the social and cultural nature of German walls as well as their political context. Mintzker's citations should also give you some suggestions for further reading.
