When and what led to humans measuring temperature with thermometers as opposed to some other random method?

The word itself comes from thermo 'of heat' and metrum 'measure', so are you asking why we call a heat-measuring device "heat measurer"? Or are you asking about a certain type of thermometer? Because there's a lot of different types: from mercury (not so common anymore in the US as they used to be) to infrared (of which there are several subtypes).
