In WWII, how common was it for people to pretend not to be Jewish?

by Makratus

I know that people like Anne Frank hid, and many emigrated, or at least tried to, but were there Jews who tried to pass themselves off as ordinary citizens? Were any successful? How would the Nazis go about determining whether someone was Jewish?

Follow up questions: did pride ever get in the way of a Jew pretending to not be Jewish? Did some Jews look down on others in their community who hid their faith?
