I've always heard that Mongols were all devastating. Did anybody stand their ground, be it town, culture, kingdom or whatever and send the Mongols home?
The Egyption Mamelukes, under Baybars, defeated the Mongols attempted invasion of Syria, Palestine and Egypt.
In 1256, Mongols under Hulegu, the grandson of Genghis Khan, and generalled by Ked-Buka obliterated the Assassins in their Elburz Mountains caves and castles, besieged and destroyed Baghdad (1257-58) killing the caliph, and the following year entered Syria and took Aleppo, Damascus, Gaza and Sidon, opening the attack route to Egypt.
In 1260 Hulegu returned home on the death of Mangu Khan leaving Ked-Buka to continue the invasion. The Egyptian Mamelukes under General Baybars met and defeated the Mongols at Ayn-Jalut near Nazareth in a decisive battle. The Mamelukes then re-conquered Syria placing a limit on the Mongol expansion.
