What was the world like between World War 1 and 2? Was there relative peace, or was there a known threat of another great war?

Until 1922 you had the Greco-Turkish War, the Russo-Polish War, the Russian Civil War and the Anglo-Irish War. Until 1924, you had the Irish Civil War, along with Hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic, followed by the Ruhr Crisis. From 1924 onwards, things were relatively peaceful, and Germany enjoyed great prosperity.

Then the Great Depression hit; the world economy hit a wall, then came Hitler's 'Bid for Power', wherein a VERY shady election and some backroom political dealing allowed Hitler to come to power. In 1936, the Rhineland was re-militarized by Hitler, and in 1938 Austria and the Sudetenland were annexed. With the occupation of the Czechlands in 1939, war was certainly inevitable.

In short, after some hiccups, the world was broadly peaceful from 1924 to 1929; it was when the Depression hit that things went bottoms up.
