Did mass colourblindness really effect people from before the mid 1900's? Or was the world monochrome?

Observing media recorded at that point in history, it is rendered in monochrome.

Even documentary recordings are monochrome, and as such I am forced to accept that either:

  • People were effected with mass colourblindness and thought that monochrome was a true representation of the world.
  • The world really was monochrome.
