Captain America's role in Army operations was highly classified within the US government. To the public Captain America was a great entertainer and supporter of our troops. After his "death" the people lamented the loss of a great morale boost for our troops. It was a travesty likened to Bob Hopes Death in 2003. But the public eventually moved on.
