What do historians think of the revisionist interpretation that there was no magic, Sauron was assassinated when news of yet another catastrophic defeat reached his court, adding fuel to opponents to his expansionist policies that were already at boiling point - with low-morale troops infighting and all-, leading to his assassination. That the entire mythology was created to lend some legitimacy to Gondorians using a lowly assassin to thwart a rising power.

Such mythicist positions are discredited among the scholarly community, as documentation of the period is too extensive to be the product of a vast conspiracy. You might find this similar response to be of some use.
