I started reading "Fires of Vesuvius" by Mary Beard and she begins the book by telling detailed stories of various groups that tried to escape the doom of Vesuvius. How do historians piece these stories together without any real witnesses? I know Pliny the Younger writes about it, but these stories seemed to gathered by the remains of Pompeii. How do we know these accounts to be accurate?
