Are there any recorded accounts of German troops failing/being defeated because of a defective enigma machine? So, not because the allied forces knew the code, but because the German forces misinterpreted their commands through the defect.

That's not how a cipher works. You either have a decoded message that you can read perfectly, or you have gibberish. Suppose I email you, using ROT13, about meeting me for a movie. if you decipher it improperly, you won't meet me at the wrong cinema but will have a message you can't make any sense of at all.
