Economic history of Indochina / South East Asia.

Hi,

I'm currently playing a game of EU4 as Vietnam, looking to build an economic empire based on production and trade. It's got me interested in the area and I'd like to learn more about it.

Can anybody here tell me about the following areas from 1450-1800, or link me to further reading? I'm looking for information on -

  • What goods were produced
  • Advancements in production techniques of goodstuffs
  • What kind of geopolitical ripples were caused in the area, and further out, by control, or shifts in the trade / economical network in the area.

I understand it's a pretty precise topic, but thanks for any help in advance.

Vietnam during those time traded a lot with China and France. The main export was rice and commodity products from the forest, like wood logs, animal parts, herbs, spices, dried fish. The French built plantations to grow tea, cotton, rubber. There may be also some mining.

Vietnam was a tributary state of China the beginning of the period but later became a colony of France. It is during the later period that the Vietnamese converted their written language from Chinese style characters to Latin alphabet.
