Medieval Scribes needed to relieve the tedium of sitting in the scriptorium all day long with a hard wood bench to sit on, poor lighting, and seriously toxic pigments. They put all sorts of crazy shenanigans in their illuminations jousting on snail back, grotesque half man half lizard monsters, and some even bitched about their working conditions. If there is a deeper meaning to the rabbits I do not know.
