Considering countries other than the US had slaves, did any other countries have wars/societal problems when trying to ban slavery?

Follow-up question: How many times has slavery been officially banned? Not simply not practiced, but actually forbidden by a law or statute.

I remember being surprised reading a city in Italy did remove slavery in Medieval times, and they actually collected money to buy out the slaves in the city at that time (if I remember it correctly).
