• France originally claimed control of eastern Canada and the region that would be acquired in the US's Louisiana purchase, but they lost most of this in the aftermath of the Seven Years' War at the Treaty of Paris in 1763.

• The territory of New Spain extended from Central America into the western US. This was lost to the series of revolutions; the most significant of which was the Mexican revolution begun on September 16th, 1810. Spain officially remained in power until the 1820s.
