Did they have a wide variety of quality/technology levels like in the West?
Who did they get imports from?
Were bicycles used to commute, for recreation, racing, etc?
Variety was not wide, but there was several good/bad models.
Imports were mostly for sport/racing bikes for a world-class athletes, rest of the population used Soviet-build bikes.
Bikes were not used widely for commute, due to general road conditions, lack of bike lanes and overall car-driving culture which was (and still are) dangerous for everybody on the road.
As for recreation it was more popular, though mostly with a road bicycles, no mountain/downhill biking.
