Nanjing was, on paper, the capital of the Nanjing 'GMD' government, declared by Japan and Wang Jingwei to be the rightful government of China, and was in fact a client state of Japan with almost no autonomy. It returned to formal GMD control after the Japanese surrender. The last president of the collaborationist GMD government was then shot for treason.
