When is it first taught to students? What causes are emphasized?
Generally information on the Great Famine is first presented in school texts in the 6th class of primary school, the last year before secondary school, where the students would be aged between 11 and 13.
Irish history textbooks for these school years primarily focus on the blight itself and the over reliance on the potato crop which is commonly attributed to the subdivision and inheritance of land making the potato the only crop able to be grown in large enough numbers to support this ever increasing amount of properties.

The Famine is also a subject for the final Leaving Certificate exams which pupils take before leaving school (age 17 or 18). History is optional at this level (most students do about 6 or 7 subjects but there are only about three spaces for optional subjects)
For example the 2012 question was "How effective were government and/or private responses to the Famine?".
