Is it just coincidental that the Roman national abbreviation SPQR uses four consecutive letters in the alphabet?

It is just coincidental.

SPQR stands for "Senatus Populusque Romanus", the "Senate and People of Rome". Interestingly the phrase came in use (1st century BC onwards) when politics became less dominated by the Senate and People and more by powerful individuals.
