It wasnt ratification that was debated per se. That was a matter for each individual state's conventions. They were important themselves with the New York and Virginia one's most of all as they were what spawned the Federalist Papers and which committed George Washington's entry into politics towards being President.

What was debated was everything in the writing of the Constitution itself. What form the Legislature should take(Virginia/New jersey/ Conn Plans). What form and how separate the Executive should be? And even how much a slave should count for purposes of the Census and thus apportionment of the legislature(3/5ths Compromise). Undoubtedly the chief architect of the document was James Madison of Virginia, who would later author the Federalist Papers with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay.
