And if I go to war with Austria again in x-1 years, thus breaking the agreement, how does that affect me? I'm more interested for the 1200-1800 period, but a modern view would also be nice.

While it might be a bit late given the question is asking about the Middle Ages, one of the most famous such treaties was the Twelve Years Truce, a 12 year ceasefire from 1609-1621 in the arguably-misnamed Eighty Years War between Spain and Dutch Protestant rebels (1568-1648). French and English diplomats helped the negotiations along and the terms explicitly involved 12 years of peace. When the truce expired, Spain and the Dutch Republic resumed hostilities as one more front of the Thirty Years War.
