what was the general feeling toward the opponent in the Civil War?? Did one hate the other more, for example did Southerners hate Northerners more or vice versa?
We don't have opinion surveys from the time to compare, but there was clearly hostility on both sides after the war. The Republicans were able to win most Presidential elections for a generation by "waving the bloody shirt" -- identifying Democrats with secession and war. For a classic example, see Ingersoll's 1876 campaign speech. Meanwhile, whites in the South manifested hostility to Northern "Yankees," including the vilification of "carpetbaggers."
