I've listened to a few of Dan Carlin's, which I love, but most of them are paid. Any good free ones out there?

The History of Rome is a classic that really hits its stride after around episode 20, an excellent narrative largely based around political history by Mike Duncan, as is his follow up 'Revolutions' on (thus far) the English, American and French Revolution. With a combined total of 250 episodes so far, this will keep you going for a while.
Also excellent is The History of England Podcast, by David Crowther, ranging from Anglo-Saxon England to the Battle of Azincourt so far and headed (in the far future) towards the death of Queen Victoria. 145 episodes so far, with many episodes that diverge from the political and elite history of England to cover social development and guest episodes on specialist sub-topics.
I'm also enjoying (but am far less able or qualified to talk about the historical quality) the History of China podcast. It is highly confusing at first to hear the lists of Non-Western names, but eventually I've gained some grasp of who did what and why. It really has brought to life a whole new area of history I had never previously studied at all very well for me. Currently around Episode 60 in the 5th century AD.

In addition to the ones ROBOTNIXONSHEAD recommends, I like 12 Byzantine Rulers and Norman Centuries, by Lars Brownworth. In Our Time with Melvin Bragg is available as a podcast, and that covers a lot of interesting history topics. My History Can Beat Up Your Politics is also interesting if you like discussions of current political events mixed in with your history.
The BBC's In Our Time is the best history podcast I found.
Check out BackStory! It's run by a trio of academics, it's very well organized and well produced, and it teaches this history nerd new things in every episode.
It's in french, but it's surely one of the best historical podcast (it's a course distributed in podcast form) I've come accross.
Very broadly speaking, it's about janissaries and the concept of muslim military slavery, but it goes much further than that. Absolutely fascinating.
I like Stuff You Missed in History Class. It has an interesting variety of topics.
The History of Philosophy without any Gaps is worth checking out if you have any interest in philosophy.
There is a "history podcasters network/group" that's come together the last year or so informally to cross promote each other's works and they all/most seem to be of a high enough quality (can't vouch for what i've not seen). Since it's an opt-in group there are some gaps: Crowther's History of England isn't on it and neither is the korean history podcast or "When diplomacy fails" (which is sort of an odd duck which reinvented itself 1/3 of the way through).
I would suggest you look there if you're interested.
The Thomas Jefferson Hour is interesting. Clay Jenkinson plays the character of Jefferson, and the weekly guest interviews him. It often ranges into modern politics (Mr. President, today we have problems with higher education....) and he discusses tomatoes quite a bit, but he can discuss Jefferson's correspondence with just about anyone off the cuff. It's an interesting take.
