Research Paper on Thomas Jefferson

by madm0ney

My research paper topic is "How Thomas Jefferson balanced his affinity with France during the French Revolution", any suggestions on books, or materials that I could check out would be much appreciated

The most recent one I read was:

  • Annette Gordon-Reed. The Hemingses of Monticello. New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 2008.

Really the section that would be useful to you is the middle part covering Jefferson's station in France as the US representative. The book itself is really about the Hemings family; they were a slave family that came to him through his mariage to Martha Wayles and one of them, Sally Hemings (who was Martha's half sister) became Jefferson's mistress either while they were in France together- or shortly thereafter. So if your library has a copy if might be a good place to take a quick look and get a feel for how Jefferson experienced France and the strategies he used to take a couple of enslaved individuals with him to France. This would have been a problem considering France did not recognize slavery within its European territory- and into the jurisdiction of the radical Parlament de Paris at that.
