I have to right an essay in my European History Class that compares and contrasts the views of historians at the time of an event and historians now. I tried scouring google, but it seems I do not have the internet finesse to find helpful primary sources that are in English. Specifically, I would like to know if the people of the time knew that the war was about more than religion, and a primary source to back it up, but any other information on the subject would be appreciated.

With all due respect, it is likely impossible to find primary sources in English. England was notably absent from the 30YW as it was dealing with its own conflict during that time. You may be able to find English language primary sources that have to do with that conflict, but the scope may be inappropriate. An example is Donald MacKay's mercenary regiment. I have only read snippets of MacKay's own diary of his mercenary career. There is also Monro, who wrote in English. I am not aware that either had discussed the strategic scope of the war, plus as far as I know they had strong religious conviction.
At the same time I will be very surprised if high school AP homework assignments expect students to cite primary sources on such a topic.
