Did Churchill and/or his contemporaries realise that the strain placed on the British Empire by the Second World War threatened it's dissolution regardless of the war's outcome?

The Cripps Mission in 1942 was sent by the British government to India that sought to gain full Indian support for the war in exchange for self-government after the war. Although it failed the writing was clearly on the wall with the British willing to give up the jewel of the empire post WWII.
