Increasingly after the beginning of 1915 they were made of tin or felt, and the spikes were removed, being removed permanently in the field by the end of 1915. As they were usually worn under a cloth cover it didn't really matter what they were made of. They were finally replaced in the field by the steel helmet in early 1916.
