Reading on the Soviets

I am looking for some books to read on:

1.) Soviet Military History 2.) In depth history of the WW2 invasion of Russia. 3.) Soviet Military Tactics 4.) In depth history of the Communist Revolution.

Look up David Glantz - he spent a good part of his life researching and writing books about the Soviet military and WW2 from the Soviet perspective.

Orlando Figes' A People's Tradgedy is a good book, I found, on the Revolution.

John Erickon and his troika,

  • Soviet High Command 1919-1939
  • Road to Stalingrad
  • Road to Berlin

Would give you a solid perspective and understanding of the Soviet Military.

  • David Glantz and his The Stumbling colossus is another good overall read.

Have you seen the reading list on the Eastern Front, or the Soviet Union

Both of these lists are excellent places to start, as are the Glantz recommendations elsewhere.

Edit: I would also like to offer my personal favourite, 'The 900 Days: the Siege of Leningrad' by Harrison Salisbury as something you should try to read if you can get your hands on a cheap copy. In the history of a single battle, something of both the fundamental spirit of the Soviet State, and the people and tactics that defended it are captured within. Both horrible and glorious at the same time.
