Not sure about academic research on the subject, but in the lore of 20th century warfare the notion of the soldier as master scavenger appears in every conflict I've read about. This is especially true in first person accounts. If an item could contribute to the effectiveness, safety, or comfort of troops on the ground it was used - unless proscribed by higher ranks. One great example is WWI dugouts on both sides of the front lines.
